ARC Evolution

ARC Evolution

An exciting new ARC is underway.

Since opening in May 2017, Cockburn ARC has been embraced by the City of Cockburn community and beyond. The centre has exceeded expectations in terms of attendance and membership. As such, since 2019, we began asking the ARC community for input into how the ARC should evolve into the future.

Following extensive community consultation, the City of Cockburn Council partnered with Fremantle Football Club to implement a project of expansion benefitting both organisations.

On November 9, 2023, the City of Cockburn endorsed Shelford Constructions as the chosen supplier to undertake the expansion.

In March 2024, works commenced, largely impacting the level one health club and Fremantle Football Club facilities, offering significant improvements to our services for our members and the community.

Latest Updates

Thursday 4 April - Access to Aquatics is changing. Starting Friday 5 April, hoarding will be installed to create a tunnel that will facilitate access to the aquatics area.

Tuesday 2 April  - Waterplay area to close temporarily as construction commences on the staff offices. From April 5, scaffolding and hoarding will be constructed which will limit the walk way through the aquatic area.

Thursday 14 March - Works commence on new temporary reception. In order to allow the work to begin on new staff offices, a temporary reception will be built across from the cafe.

Key Aspects for Cockburn ARC members

The project will see 695m2 of new and approximately 550m2 of reconfigured space in the level one health club.

  • Increasing the gym floor space to 1500m2
  • Increasing the Body and Mind Studio to 250m2
  • Relocating and modifying the main group fitness studio
  • Relocating and modifying the indoor cycle studio
  • Converting existing administration spaces to increase gym floor space
  • Moving the administration spaces to other areas within the facility.
  • Additional retail space including a change room.

Other aspects

The Fremantle Football Club component includes spectator seating areas and public amenities for the south facing area of the building, as well as gender neutral change rooms (can be used by either a mens or womens team)  and amenities.

Impact on members and the community

While there will be some impact on our members, we aim to continue offering our services throughout the construction period. It does mean that alternative spaces may be utilised for some of our programs and services at times, however we anticipate being able to continue to offer a high level of service and facilities with minimal or no pause in membership offerings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the expansion necessary?
The City of Cockburn has experienced significant population growth over the past 10 years and this growth is forecasted to continue over the next 10-20 years. Cockburn ARC provides a vital service to the Cockburn community, and expanding our health club will ensure we can continue to offer services to the community.

Why just the health club? What about another pool?
Expanding the Health Club was identified as offering the greatest value to the community within feasibility investigations undertaken by the City.

With the restrictions of space at the ARC precinct, there is no capacity to expand the aquatics offering.
What is happening with the group fitness studios?
You asked and we listened. We are looking at reworking these spaces so that they meet the needs of our evolving community. Bigger spaces where required, the right space for the right class and use of technology to improve the experience.
