The weather is becoming increasingly chilly, and swimming lessons are often paused during winter. According to The Conversation, there are plenty of benefits to keep your child swimming over the winter break. So, what are they?
Keeping up With Skills
Pausing your child’s swimming lessons can easily turn into stopping lessons altogether. Or, it can make restarting lessons in summer a bit more tricky, as children try to remember the skills they haven’t practised in months. The benefit of keeping up with lessons over winter is giving children the opportunity to regularly hone their water skills.
Prefered Lesson Days
Paused swimming lessons may lead to missed lessons, potentially losing your preferred lesson timeslots. Keeping your lessons going ensures your child not only stays on track, it also keeps a time and day that’s suitable for you without the hassle of looking for a new lesson day if you take a break.
Safety Importance
It is important to remember that drowning risk is present 365 days a year, with nearly a third of drowning deaths occurring in autumn and winter. Learning to swim is one strategy for parents to reduce a child's risk of drowning, along with active supervision. Participation in swimming lessons declines significantly after age seven, with 40% of primary school children graduating without being able to swim the length of an Olympic swimming pool. The younger years are a valuable time to ensure your child has the skills and knowledge to keep themselves safe in the water. Keeping up with swimming lessons throughout winter is important in keeping your child safe and confident in the water.
Keeping Active
Sometimes those winter blues can stop us from keeping active and getting out and about. Swimming regularly not only will keep the kids busy, but it includes major physical, cognitive, language and skill development benefits. This means that swimming will keep them happy and healthy! Even when its raining outside, they can practise their strokes in our indoor pools. Or, you can make the most of swimming outside of lesson times too. Our pools are heated all year round, so you don’t have to worry about the kids freezing either!
When you join Swim ARCademy, your membership gives you access to one 30 minute lesson with an instructor per week, as well as unlimited use of our recreational pools outside your lesson times.
So, you have plenty of time for your child to swim and practise, no matter the weather!
