Six reasons to swim over the cooler months

Cockburn ARC Cockburn ARC
9 May, 2023
As sunny days become few and far between, the thought of swimming is probably far from your mind.

While it might be tempting to put lessons on hold, it might actually do more damage than good. Like learning any skill, it requires consistent practise to master water safety knowledge and behaviours.

Research by Royal Life Saving Australia has found that around 40% of kids leaving primary school cannot competently swim 50m and 23% of Aussie adults have little to no swimming skills.

Swimming lessons are essential for drowning prevention. When you put your child's lessons on hold, you're stopping them from learning vital information that could one day save a life.

We've put together six reasons why you should continue swimming lessons over the cooler months...

1. It’s good for your health

Swimming provides lots of health benefits that can help to keep you healthy and happy at the same time, which includes:
  • Reducing stress and contributing to better sleep
  • Building strength and flexibility
  • Increasing endurance
  • Improving balance and posture.

2. It can benefit people of all abilities

Another great thing about swimming is that people of any age and/or ability can take part. For individuals with a disability, water provides a stress-free environment that can help improve balance, coordination and motor skills. At the ARC, we have a number of features to make our pools and facilities accessible for everyone.

3. It’s challenging

With many different levels to progress through, swimming provides challenges and rewards while you build your confidence in water safety. Plus, when you pass a grade for Swim ARCademy, you'll be invited to spin our SuperStar Wheel and claim a prize!

4. It’s a great way to meet people

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to make friends while you grow your confidence in swimming.

5. It can help advance skills in other sports

Having the confidence to be safe in and around water will also open the door to participating in a range of other aquatic activities such as rowing, surfing, jet skiing and paddleboarding.

6. It’s fun

And most importantly, swimming is lots of fun for people of all ages. Learning to swim can help adults and children enjoy being in the water while staying safe.

Our Swim ARCademy classes are suitable for all ages from bubs to adults. Our qualified swimming Instructors will help you develop the skills you need to stay safe in and around water.

With our new class matching tool, you can find the perfect class in just a few clicks and enrol online!
