Winter is generally a period of time when people put a hold on their aquatic actvitites. This is normally due to reasons such as the weather getting too cold or just wanting to have a break. However, here at Swim ARCademy, we want to challenge the traditional stereotype that Winter isnât a good time for swimming!
Firstly, our warm water pool and learn to swim pool are heated to a lovely 34°C & 32°C all year round! Our change hubs are also conveniently located next to the pools, making it much easier for you to hop out and quickly change your child into something nice and warm. It is cold outside but it wouldnât bother you inside the Cockburn ARC anyway!
Secondly and what I would like to stress on, is the importance of continuity in an infantâs overall development.
Let's talk about the word âDevelopmentâ in this analogy. Picture yourself standing at the bottom of a mountain; you want to go from where you are standing to the very peak at the top. Development is a lot like this, it is the process of growth and change, climbing from the bottom of the mountain up to the very top, that everyone experiences.
We want the very best for your childâs developmental journey; especially at the infants and toddlers stage, the relationships they form, and the activities they engage in both inside and outside the home, are key to a healthy and positive growth that can last a lifetime.
Recent studies have shown that infants who get exposed to a variety of colours, shapes, textures, sounds and activities on a regular basis, experience higher ongoing learning benefits. This area of study is called âContinuity of Care (COC)â and has emerged as a strongly recommended practice for infant and toddler care and education; this is also very much applicable to the area of sport and physical development.
Continuing your classes over the winter months ensures this consistent exposure to a particular environment. It will allow your child to develop a sense of familiarity with the facility, not only developing them physically through the class activities, it will also allow their cognitive side to expand as they are given the opportunity to explore and grow in an environment they are comfortable in.
Children exposed to âContinuity of Careâ are shown to experience decreased family stress, smoother developmental progression, improved behaviour and more comfortable transitioning to pre-school as the children already understanding how to engage and make connections with other individuals.
Swimming requires repetition, practice, and is hastened by constant parental involvement and positive reinforcement. The continuity of care through your classes during winter will not only impact your child in terms of their physical development, it will also impact their cognitive, social, and emotional development in ways that would lead to a healthy and positive growth that will last a lifetime.
